A Honda HR-V key fob battery is a CR2032 on the smart keys of the first generation, sold in the US from 2016, and of the redesigned HR-V from 2023. The second-generation US HR-V is a larger car on Civic-related bones, and its fob looks newer. The cell is the same size. In other markets the HR-V and Vezel nameplates follow the same rule: read the stamp, expect CR2032 on a proximity fob.
The battery, stated plainly
| What this page covers | honda hr-v key fob battery |
|---|---|
| Battery to buy | CR2032 |
| Fob you are likely holding | HR-V smart key |
| Cell type | 3-volt lithium coin cell. Do not use a rechargeable LIR cell. |
| Programming after the swap | Not required when you only change the battery. |
The first-generation fob is the one 2016 through 2022 owners have. It opens with an emergency key and a coin. The 2023-on fob opens the same way in a different shape. Do not buy a shell from the wrong generation and call it a battery. You need the cell unless the plastic is already broken.
LX cars in some early years are the ones to double-check. If the HR-V in your driveway still turns a metal key, you may not have the smart fob this page assumes. The stamp will say CR1616 or CR2032 plainly. Buy that.
European and Australian HR-Vs, including hybrid versions, do not get a unique coin because the steering wheel is on the other side. Heat in the cabin is the real regional difference.
If the fob still misbehaves
A new HR-V fob that dies quickly was often left in the car or fitted with a bulk-pack cell. Use one name-brand CR2032, then carry the fob with you. Touch-start covers a dead cell. It does not cover a fob stored on the dash.
