This chart is the shopping list. It is not a substitute for the stamp on the cell in your fob. Honda overlapped smart keys and basic remotes in the same model years, and cars imported from another market do not always match the United States column.
Use the chart to walk into a shop with the likely number, then confirm it before you pay.
The battery, stated plainly
| What this page covers | honda key fob battery size chart |
|---|---|
| Battery to buy | CR2032, CR1616, or CR2025 by model family |
| Fob you are likely holding | All common Honda shells |
| Cell type | 3-volt lithium coin cell. Do not use a rechargeable LIR cell. |
| Programming after the swap | Not required when you only change the battery. |
CR2032, 20 mm by 3.2 mm, is the usual cell for Honda smart keys. That includes most push-button Civics from 2016 on, Accords from the ninth generation’s higher trims onward, CR-Vs from the fifth generation, Pilots from the third generation, Odysseys from the 2018 redesign and many earlier EX and Touring vans, HR-Vs, Passports, and the 2017-and-later Ridgeline. Hybrids use the same fob family as the gasoline car they are based on. A hybrid badge does not change the coin cell.
CR1616, about 16 mm by 1.6 mm, is the usual cell for older remote heads and flip keys. Think Element, first-generation Ridgeline, many 2006–2011 Civics, plenty of Accords before proximity entry became common, and early Odyssey remotes. If the metal key goes into an ignition barrel, you are more likely in CR1616 territory than CR2032 territory.
CR2025, 20 mm by 2.5 mm, appears on a smaller set of older compact remotes, including some S2000-era fobs and a few early 2000s Accords and Preludes. It is the easiest cell to confuse with CR2032 because the diameter matches. Thickness is the difference. If the cover will not close, you bought the thick one.
Civic, Accord, and CR-V each have their own pages because the shell changes even when the cell does not. A 2016 Civic smart fob and a 2022 Civic smart fob both want CR2032, and they do not open with the same motion. The chart gets you the part. The model page gets you the seam.
Trims that added remote start or a power tailgate added a button, not a second battery. A five-button Odyssey fob and a three-button LX fob from the same generation still use one coin cell.
Right-hand-drive Jazz, Civic, CR-V, and HR-V cars in the UK, Europe, and Australia follow the same IEC numbers. Heat in the Gulf and cold on the Canadian prairies change how long the cell lasts, not which number fits.
Changing the cell
Open the fob only after you have a candidate cell in hand, so you can compare thickness on the table. The replacement steps differ for a coin-split smart key and a screwed flip key. Follow the replacement guide that matches the shell, not the badge on the grille.
If your year is missing from the chart, the car is either older than the smart-key era or newer than this edition. The stamp still decides. Bring the old cell to the counter if you are unsure.
If the fob still misbehaves
A chart cannot see a swapped fob. Used cars often have a dealer fob from a later parts catalog, or an aftermarket shell. When the chart and the stamp disagree, the stamp wins, and you should say so out loud in the aisle so you do not talk yourself into the more common size.
Two cars in one household can need two sizes. A 2019 CR-V and a 2008 Element on the same driveway are not the same purchase.
What to spend, and what not to buy
Buy the size you confirmed, in a name brand, with a date code you can read. A two-pack is rational if you have a spare fob. A twenty-pack of unmarked cells is how people end up replacing a “new” battery twice.

Questions people ask
Does a Honda Accord and a Honda Civic use the same key fob battery?
Recent smart keys for both are usually CR2032. Older flip keys for both are often CR1616. Check the year and the stamp, not just the model name.
Where is the size printed?
On the face of the coin cell, as CR2032, CR2025, or CR1616. The fob shell sometimes repeats it in tiny type inside the cup.
Do Honda truck and van fobs use a bigger battery?
No. Pilot, Passport, Ridgeline, and Odyssey smart fobs still use a single CR2032 in the generations covered here.

The code printed on the cell already in your fob overrides any chart. A fob bought later, or a car sold in another country, can use a different shell.
